Keiko Yamamoto

Former NHK Commentator on Gender & Equality
PROFILE
After completing a master’s program at the Graduate School of International Development, Nagoya University, she began her career at NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation). She worked at the Kanazawa Broadcasting Station, the NHK Social Affairs Division, and NHK World-JAPAN before being appointed Deputy General Manager of the News Department at NHK’s Nagoya Broadcasting Station and an NHK Commentator specializing in gender and equality issues. In September 2024, she began a new career as an independent journalist.
Beyond broadcasting, Yamamoto has been an active advocate for female journalists. In 2001, she founded a study group that now includes over 1,200 members, working to drive social change in areas such as education, work style reforms, and gender equality. Recognized as a leader in Asia, she was named Asia21 Fellow by the Asia Society in 2009.
Yamamoto has also co-authored influential works, including “Could You Step Aside? Is the Media Delivering Women's Voices? and “Before Pressing the Like Button: Internet Space and Media from a Gender Perspective”.
She currently writes the column “ K-point of the Era” for HuffPost, analyzing movements for gender equality.
