PROFILE
Born and raised in Sapporo, Yaguchi received his B.A. from Goshen College and his Ph.D. (American Studies) from the College of William and Mary. He was also a Fulbright visiting scholar at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the East-West Center in Honolulu. He is currently a professor at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of the University of Tokyo, where he also serves as Vice President for Global Education and Director of the Center for Global Education.
He has taught, presented, and published extensively in both Japanese and English on the intercultural dynamics of Japan–Pacific–U.S. relations, with a particular focus on Hawai‘i. His commentary on U.S.–Japan relations has appeared in major media outlets including The New York Times, The Washington Post, NHK, CNN, and the BBC. His recent book, Naze Todai wa Otoko Darake Nanoka (Why Are There So Many Men at UTokyo?), critically examines the gender imbalance at the University of Tokyo through a historical and comparative lens and has been widely reviewed in both media and academic circles.
