Torin Boyd

Photojournalist

Mr. Torin Boyd has been based out of Tokyo since 1986, concentrating his work on modern day Japan and Asia. During this time he completed a nine year stint as a contract photographer for U.S. News & World Report, was a photo correspondent for the French photo agency Gamma Presse Images, and has also freelanced for major magazines in Japan, America and Europe.

In the past year he has completed assignments for Newsweek, the National Geographic Society, Knight Ridder, Time Asia, Winds, and A Day in the Life of the United States Armed Forces. His work has been exhibited in Tokyo, New York, Washington DC, and at the 1997 Visa Pour l'Image International Festival of Photojournalism in Perpignan, France.

He is also a Japanese photo historian and co-author of Portraits in Sepia, a seminal guide to Japanese photography from 1850 to 1910 (published by Asahi Sonorama in October 2000).

In June of 2001 he started the Tokyo Photo Night series, a community slide show event that showcases top photographic talent from Japan and abroad. This is a project that aims to promote photojournalism.
