Ryuichi Teshima

Journalist specializing in foreign affairs
Visiting Professor at the Waseda University Graduate School of Political Science and Economics

Mr. Teshima was born in 1949 in Hokkaido prefecture, Japan. Upon graduating from the Keio University Faculty of Economics, he became a journalist for NHK, where he covered the Prime Minister's office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Liberal Democratic Party. He became the Washington DC correspondent from 1987 to 1991, and was later named a Senior Fellow in the Harvard University Center for International Affairs. He was appointed Bonn Bureau Chief (Germany) in 1995, and served as the Washington Bureau Chief from 1997 to 2005. At the time of 9/11, he conducted a 24-hour relay broadcasting for 11 consecutive days. Mr. Teshima is well known for his appearances on TV, and for creating major documentaries, including the TV documentary, "Seisen eno boso" [Charging into a Sacred War]. His latest documentary is "Gaiko no shunkan 71nen¥nikuson kimitsu te-pu ga kataru beichuusekkin" [Moment of Diplomacy in 1971 / Classified Nixon Tapes Reveal the Relaxing in Relations between US and China] (June, 2005). Mr. Teshima left NHK in June 2005 to work as a writer and freelance journalist specializing in foreign affairs, publishing a variety of works on international and security issues. His published works include "Nippon FSX wo ute" [Shoot down Nippon FSX] (Shinchosha), and "1991nen nihon no haiboku" [Year 1991 Japan's Defeat] (Shinchosha), among others. He published "Ultra Dollar" (Shinchosha) in March 2006.
