Toru Takanarita

Professor of Sendai University / Former Asahi Shimbun Editorialist
Member of Great East Japan Earthquake Reconstruction Design Council
Representative, The Fund for the Future of Children affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake

Mr. Takanarita was born in 1948 in Okayama City, Japan. He entered the Asahi Shimbun upon graduating from the University of Tokyo, Faculty of Economics. After having worked in Yamagata and Shizuoka branch office, he was a staff writer in the Business News Department, a correspondent for the US Bureau, Assistant General Manager of the Business News Department, and editorial writer. He was the newscaster for TV Asahi "News Station" from 1996 through 1997. From 1998 through 2002, he was US Bureau chief and later editorialist on US and Global Economy. Upon retirement, he served as a senior correspondent and chief of Ishinomaki Bureau from Jan, 2008 through Feb, 2011.

He has been a Professor at Sendai University since April, 2011, as well as an affiliate professor at Maebashi Kyoai Gakuen College, an adjunct instructor at Sendai Shirayuri Women's College .
He had written a serial titled "News Drag" on "a-salon", one of The Asahi Shinbun membership website "asPara Club" subject category. He had also written a serial tilted "Yami Nabe Ken" for website called "Jouhou Yatai ("Information Vender"). ewoman Roundtable Discussion chair.

Mr. Takanarita established The Fund for the Future of Children affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and serves as its representative. Its purpose is to provide financial support for school-aged children who lost their parents or have parents who were severely disabled as a result of The Great East Japan Earthquake.
