Fumiko Hayashi

Mayor of the city of Yokohama

Mayor Hayashi was born in Tokyo in 1946 and graduated from Tokyo Metropolitan Aoyama High School. After working at companies such as Toyo Rayon Co., Ltd. (currently Toray Industries, Inc.) and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. (currently Panasonic Corporation), she joined a Honda dealer in 1977. In 1987, she joined BMW Tokyo Division (currently BMW Tokyo, Corp.). Since then, she has served as president of Fahren Tokyo K.K. (now Volkswagen Tokyo K.K.), president of BMW Tokyo, Corp., chairwoman and CEO of The Daiei, Inc., and President of Tokyo Nissan Auto Sales Co., Ltd.
Mayor Hayashi has been selected as one of Wall Street Journal"s "50 Women to Watch" and Forbes Magazine"s "The World"s 100 Most Powerful Women" in 2004, and Fortune Magazine"s "50 Most Powerful Women in Business: International" in 2008 among others.
She was elected mayor of Yokohama in July 2009. She also serves as a committee member of the Cabinet Office"s Gender Equality Bureau and an affiliate professor at Tokyo Jogakkan College.
