Jiniru Pyon

Born in Tokyo in 1947, Mr. Jin Il worked as a newspaper reporter for ten years after graduating from the Department of English Literature at Meiji Gakuin University. He became a freelance journalist and visited North Korea in 1980 to report on the situation in that country. In 1982 he launched "Korea Report", a specialist journal focusing on issues relating to North Korea, and continues to act as editor of this journal. In 1985 he established a group to provide support to both North and South Korea at the Kobe Universiad. He also produced a Korea unified flag. He started to work as a commentator on television and radio from 1986. In 1991 he was also responsible for organizing celebrations in Tokyo to commemorate the simultaneous joining of North Korea and South Korea to the United Nations. He also worked to get direct flights between North Korea and Nagoya. In 1992 he started travelled extensively to South Korea on reporting assignments. Since 1998 he has participated in the shortwave radio program "Asia News".
He also participated as a witness in 1999 for the Diet's research committee on North Korean issues. In 2003 he acted as an advisor for the Japan Coast Guard and since 2003 he has been working as a visiting professor at Okinawa University.
