Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary

Ambassador Fatima assumed the charges of the Ambassador of Bangladesh to Japan in 2016. Prior to her current post, she served as the Director General (East Asia and the Pacific), in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Dhaka.

Ambassador Fatima joined the Bangladesh Foreign Service in 1989. She has served in various Bangladesh missions including, the Permanent Mission to the United Nations, New York (Second/First Secretary, 1994-1998); Deputy High Commission, Kolkata, India (Counsellor,1998-2000); Permanent Mission to the United Nations in Geneva (Counsellor, 2002-2005); and Bangladesh Embassy in Beijing (Minister/Deputy Chief of Mission, 2005).

Ambassador Fatima has specialization in human rights and humanitarian issues, involved in the process leading to Bangladesh’s accession to the major international human rights and disarmament instruments. She has represented Bangladesh in the UN General Assembly, UN Security Council, Commission on Human Rights and various human rights expert bodies, ECOSOC, UNHCR, IOM, ICRC, ITU, ODC, as well as in SAARC.

Ambassador Fatima served in the Commonwealth Secretariat, London, as Head of Human Rights (2006-2007); and with the International Organization for Migration as the Regional Representative for South Asia, Dhaka (2007-2011) and as the Regional Coordinator and Adviser for South and South West Asia and Regional Adviser for Climate Change and Migration in IOM’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, Bangkok (2012-2015).

She received her Master’s in International Relations and Diplomacy from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, USA.
