Miwa Kato

Asia Pacific Regional Director, UNWOMEN

In her position as Regional Director of UNWOMEN for the Asia Pacific region since 2016, Miwa Kato oversees a range of support, including policy and technical assistance and advocacy, aimed at promoting the rights of women and girls within 42 countries in the Asia Pacific region, including Japan.
After completing a graduate program at Sophia University in Tokyo, in 1998 Ms. Kato became a member of the Permanent Mission of Japan to the United Nations in New York, working as a special assistant in the Political Affairs Division, Security Council Team. She started working for the Executive Office of the Director-General of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons in The Hague in 2000, before becoming a special assistant at the Embassy of Japan in Austria. Ms. Kato started working for the United Nations in 2003 and in 2011 became the first Senior Programme Coordinator, Regional Programme for Afghanistan and Neighboring Countries in Kabul. In 2013, she became Chief, Regional Section for South Asia, East Asia and the Pacific at UNODC headquarters. She moved to UNWOMEN in 2015, becoming Country Director for Egypt. Was appointed to current role in 2016.
